Meaning & history of the Qatar flag
Qatar's flag is maroon with a broad white band at the hoist separated by a nine-point serrated line. White signifies peace, and the distinctive dark maroon is said to result from the local red dye darkening under the intense sun. The nine points mark Qatar as the ninth member of the 'reconciled Emirates' of the Gulf after an 1868 treaty. It has an unusually elongated shape.
