Meaning & history of the Latvia flag
Latvia's flag is a deep carmine red with a narrow white horizontal stripe across the centre. The distinctive dark red — 'Latvian red' — and the design are said to date to a 13th-century chronicle describing a wounded leader wrapped in a white sheet stained with blood, leaving a white stripe. It is among the oldest flag designs, readopted in 1990.
