Meaning & history of the Austria flag
Austria's flag is a simple horizontal triband of red-white-red, among the oldest national flags in continuous use. Legend attributes it to Duke Leopold V, whose white surcoat was stained red with blood in battle except where his belt had been, leaving a white stripe. Whatever its true origin, the design dates to the medieval Babenberg era.
