Italy's flag is a vertical tricolour of green, white and red. Inspired by the French Revolutionary tricolour, it was first used by Napoleonic-era republics in the 1790s. Popular tradition reads green as the country's plains and hills, white as the snowy Alps, and red as the blood shed in the wars of unification.
