Meaning & history of the Iceland flag
Iceland's flag is a red Scandinavian cross fimbriated in white on a blue field. The colours evoke the island's landscape: blue for the surrounding Atlantic and mountains, white for snow and ice, and red for the island's volcanic fire. The Nordic cross links Iceland to the other Scandinavian nations. It was adopted in 1944 at the founding of the republic.
