Meaning & history of the Costa Rica flag
Costa Rica's flag has five horizontal bands — blue, white, red, white, blue — the red central band being double width, with the state version adding the coat of arms. Blue represents the sky and opportunities, white peace and wisdom, and red the warmth of the people and blood shed for freedom. The red band was added in 1848, inspired by the French tricolour.
