Meaning & history of the Bulgaria flag
Bulgaria's flag is a horizontal tricolour of white, green and red. White represents peace and freedom, green the country's fertile agricultural land and forests, and red the courage and blood of those who fought for independence from Ottoman rule. The design, adopted in 1879, was modelled on the Russian Pan-Slavic colours with the blue replaced by green.
