Meaning & history of the United States flag

The United States' flag, the Stars and Stripes, has thirteen red and white stripes for the original colonies and a blue canton with fifty white stars for the current states. Red signifies valour and hardiness, white purity and innocence, and blue vigilance, perseverance and justice. A new star has been added as each state joined, most recently for Hawaii in 1960.
