Meaning & history of the Ukraine flag

Ukraine's flag has two equal horizontal bands of blue over yellow, evoking a blue sky above golden fields of wheat — a fitting image for one of the world's great grain-growing nations. The colours date to the medieval Kingdom of Galicia–Volhynia and the 1917–1920 independence period, and were restored in 1991 as the country left the Soviet Union.
