Meaning & history of the Tunisia flag
Tunisia's flag is red with a central white disc bearing a red crescent and five-pointed star. The crescent and star are traditional symbols of Islam, and the red recalls the blood of martyrs who resisted foreign rule and the Ottoman heritage. The design derives from the mid-19th-century flag of the Beylik of Tunis and was retained after independence in 1956.
