Trinidad and Tobago's flag is red with a black diagonal band, edged in white, running from upper hoist to lower fly. Red represents the warmth and energy of the sun and the people, black the strength, unity and wealth of the land, and white the sea, purity and equality. The design's earth, water and fire symbolism was chosen at independence in 1962.
