Meaning & history of the Timor-Leste flag

Timor-Leste's flag is red with a black triangle at the hoist bearing a white star, edged by a yellow triangle. Yellow represents the traces of colonialism, black the obscurantism that must be overcome, red the struggle for national liberation, and the white star the light that guides. It was first raised in 1975 and restored at independence in 2002.
