Meaning & history of the Switzerland flag

Switzerland's flag is one of only two square national flags: a bold white cross on a red field. The white cross has been a Swiss battlefield emblem since the medieval Confederation, standing for freedom, honour and neutrality, and its arms are of equal length. The design directly inspired the emblem of the Red Cross, founded in Geneva, with the colours reversed.
