Meaning & history of the Sri Lanka flag
Sri Lanka's flag features a golden lion holding a sword on a maroon field, with four bo-leaves in the corners, beside vertical green and orange stripes. The lion represents the Sinhalese people and bravery, the bo-leaves the Buddhist virtues, and the green and orange stripes the Muslim and Tamil communities. The maroon-and-gold lion recalls the ancient Kandyan kingdom.
