Meaning & history of the Spain flag

Spain's flag has a broad yellow central band, twice the height of the red bands above and below, with the national coat of arms toward the hoist. The 'blood and gold' colours derive from the historic kingdoms of Aragon and Castile. The arms combine the emblems of Spain's constituent kingdoms flanked by the Pillars of Hercules and the motto 'Plus Ultra'.
