South Sudan's flag has black, red and green horizontal bands separated by thin white stripes, with a blue triangle at the hoist bearing a golden star. Black represents the people, red the blood shed for freedom, green the land, white peace, and blue the waters of the Nile. The gold 'Star of Bethlehem' signifies unity. It was adopted at independence in 2011.
