Meaning & history of the South Africa flag

South Africa's flag joins six colours in a distinctive Y-shape laid on its side: a green horizontal Y separates red (top) and blue (bottom) bands, with a black triangle edged in gold and white at the hoist. Adopted in 1994 at the end of apartheid, the converging Y expresses the coming together of diverse peoples on a united path forward.
