Meaning & history of the Peru flag

Peru's flag has three vertical bands of red, white and red, with the coat of arms centred on the state version. Tradition links the red-and-white to the flamingos the liberator San Martín saw taking flight. Red represents the blood shed for independence, white peace and purity. The arms feature a vicuña, a cinchona tree and a cornucopia of coins.
