Meaning & history of the Netherlands flag
The Netherlands' flag is a horizontal tricolour of red, white and blue, among the oldest of its kind and an influence on many others. It evolved from the orange-white-blue 'Prince's Flag' of William of Orange during the revolt against Spain; the orange faded to red by the 17th century. The colours are simply read as the national colours today.
