Meaning & history of the Montenegro flag

Montenegro's flag is a red field bordered in gold bearing the golden two-headed eagle and lion of the country's coat of arms. The design revives the royal standard of King Nikola I, and the double-headed eagle reflects the historic link between church and state. It was adopted in 2004 as the republic moved toward independence, achieved in 2006.
