Meaning & history of the Mauritania flag

Mauritania's flag is green with a gold crescent and star, and (since 2017) a red stripe along the top and bottom edges. Green and the crescent-and-star represent Islam, the state religion, and gold the sands of the Sahara. The red bands, added by referendum, honour the blood shed by those who defended the country against colonialism.
