Meaning & history of the Malta flag

Malta's flag is divided vertically into white (hoist) and red, with a representation of the George Cross edged in red in the upper hoist corner. The white and red derive from the arms of the medieval Norman rulers. The George Cross was awarded to the island by Britain in 1942 for its people's bravery under siege in the Second World War.
