Meaning & history of the Madagascar flag

Madagascar's flag has a white vertical band at the hoist and horizontal red and green bands to the fly. White and red were the colours of the historic Merina kingdom that ruled before colonisation, with red for sovereignty and white for purity, while green represents the coastal peoples and hope. It was adopted just before independence in 1958.
