Meaning & history of the Haiti flag

Haiti's flag has blue over red horizontal bands with the coat of arms on a central white panel in the state version. Tradition says the blue and red came from tearing the white from the French tricolour after the revolution. The arms show a palm topped with a liberty cap over cannons and flags, with the motto 'L'Union Fait La Force' — unity makes strength.
