Meaning & history of the Ghana flag

Ghana's flag has red, gold and green horizontal bands with a black five-pointed star centred. As the first sub-Saharan nation to gain independence (1957), Ghana chose Pan-African colours: red for the blood of those who died for freedom, gold for the country's mineral wealth, and green for its forests. The black 'lodestar of African freedom' inspired many later flags.
