Germany's flag is a horizontal tricolour of black, red and gold. The colours trace to the 19th-century movement for a unified, democratic Germany and the uniforms of volunteer soldiers in the Napoleonic Wars. Associated with liberal and republican ideals, they were adopted by the Weimar Republic and confirmed by the Federal Republic in 1949.
