Meaning & history of the France flag

France's flag, the Tricolore, has three equal vertical bands of blue, white and red. Born of the 1789 Revolution, it combined the red and blue of Paris with the royal white. The colours came to stand for the revolutionary ideals of liberty, equality and fraternity, and the vertical tricolour form inspired flags across the world.
