Meaning & history of the Canada flag

Canada's flag, the Maple Leaf, was adopted in 1965 after long debate to replace ensigns based on the Union Jack. Two red vertical bands frame a white square bearing a stylised eleven-pointed red maple leaf. The red and white are Canada's official colours, and the maple leaf has been an emblem of the country since the 19th century.
