Meaning & history of the Belize flag

Belize's flag is royal blue with narrow red bands top and bottom and a white disc bearing the national coat of arms. The arms show two woodcutters with tools flanking a shield and a mahogany tree, recalling the logging industry that founded the colony, with the motto 'Sub Umbra Floreo' — I flourish in the shade. It is notably the only national flag to depict human figures prominently.
