Belgium's flag is a vertical tricolour of black, yellow and red, colours taken from the arms of the Duchy of Brabant — a gold lion with red claws and tongue on a black field. Adopted around the 1830 revolution that won independence from the Netherlands, its vertical arrangement was inspired by the French tricolour.
