Angola's flag has a red upper half and black lower half with a central yellow emblem of a machete, cogwheel and star. Red honours the blood spilled in the struggle for independence, black represents Africa, and yellow the country's wealth. The machete-and-gear motif, echoing the Soviet hammer and sickle, symbolises agricultural and industrial workers.
