Meaning & history of the Afghanistan flag

Afghanistan's flag has changed more often than almost any other nation's. The internationally recognised 2004–2021 design placed three vertical bands — black for the troubled past, red for the blood shed for independence, and green for hope and Islam — behind a white national emblem showing a mosque. After the 2021 Taliban takeover, a white flag bearing the Shahada is flown domestically.
