North Macedonia's flag is red with a golden sun of eight broadening rays reaching to the edges — 'the new sun of liberty' referenced in the national anthem. Red and gold are traditional Macedonian colours. Adopted in 1995, it replaced an earlier flag whose Vergina Sun symbol had provoked a dispute with Greece over shared heritage.
