Kuwait's flag uses the four Pan-Arab colours in a horizontal band of green over white over red, with a black trapezoid at the hoist. Green represents the fertile land, white purity and deeds, red the blood on Kuwaiti swords, and black the defeat of enemies — an arrangement drawn from a line of classical Arabic poetry. It was adopted at independence in 1961.
